Get the text out of a photo or screenshot without retyping it
There is no need to copy out by hand the words in a screen that blocks copying, a photographed notice or a captured lecture slide. Add the image, pick the language and press Extract text: the recognized text appears in an editable box, ready to fix and copy. Recognition happens in your browser and the image is never uploaded.
A closer look
Optical character recognition (OCR) looks at the shapes of letters in an image and works out which characters they are. This tool runs the open-source Tesseract engine in your browser; on the first run it downloads the engine and the data for the language you chose (a few MB). Only the recognition software comes down — your image never goes up. The engine only searches within the characters of the selected language, so that choice matters a lot. The menu covers dozens of languages, from Spanish, German and Polish to Arabic, Hindi, Japanese and Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), plus a combined Korean + English option for mixed text.
The result is plain text. Line breaks follow the lines in the image, and fonts, colors and table cells are not kept. The engine is tuned for printed text: neat handwriting works somewhat, cursive is unreliable. If you add several images at once, the engine is prepared only once and works through them in order, and the results are gathered in one box with a “===== file name =====” separator between files. Only image files are accepted, so PDFs cannot be added here.
How to use it
- Drop an image with text on the page or use Choose file. You can select several at once.
- In Language, choose the language of the text in the image. English is selected by default.
- Press Extract text. The first run takes a little longer while the language data downloads; after that, progress is shown as a percentage.
- Fix any misread characters directly in the result box, then press Copy text and paste it wherever you need it.
When it helps
Common snags
Tip For a photographed paper document, run it through Document Scanner in B&W document mode first to remove shadows; recognition is usually better afterwards.

How do I get better accuracy?
Bigger, sharper text works best. If it looks blurry, zoom in and re-screenshot, or use a higher-contrast image.
Does it read handwriting?
It is optimized for printed text. Neat handwriting works somewhat; cursive is unreliable.
Are tables and layout preserved?
Plain text is extracted; complex table structures may not be preserved.
Is it free?
Completely free with no limits. Your images are never uploaded.
